With increasing pressure on arts organisations to deliver against multiple agendas; increasing audience engagement, demonstrating impact and generating income, you can’t afford to ignore the people who can help you achieve your goals.

This industry seminar was about making the best use of people’s investment in your organisation.

Delegates learned from inspirational case studies to help them understand how to make the most of the people that support them.

Speakers:

Andy Walsh - FC United

Andy Walsh is a seasoned community activist and the General Manager of FC United of Manchester, a mutually-owned football club formed in 2005 in opposition to the Glazer takeover of Manchester United. The club has over 3,500 members and is raising £4.5M to develop a new 5,000 capacity community football ground and sports complex in Manchester.Andy will describe the central role that people have played in the success of the organisation. Many motivated and passionate supporters of FC United are not necessarily interested in football, but in its ethos and impact on local communities.

Delegates heard how understanding and empowerment are key to a mutually beneficial relationship. Andy shared his experience in developing a Membership system which now provides not only income but a strong team of people who are committed to the success of his organisation.

Nina Arwitz - MOSAIC, National Parks

Nina Arwitz manages the “Mosaic” audience engagement programme at the Campaign for National Parks, and has led its development and expansion over the last five years. She has an MSc in Environmental Policy and Economics from the London School of Economics, and a professional background in community engagement and participation. Hailing from Sweden, she worked in the Middle East and Africa before moving to London, where she is now enjoying the opportunity to see some of the UK's most spectacular landscapes.

Nina Arwitz, discussed their National Project MOSAIC, aimed at increasing ethnic minority attendance through an engagement model which focuses on empowerment and engagement of their Community Champions. Run over ten years the result has been a successful highly engaged ambassador scheme with a strong retention rate which enables National Parks access to hard-to-reach communities.

Jennie Godsalve - Creative & Cultural Skills

Jennie Godsalve is an Engagement Manager for Creative & Cultural Skills, the Sector Skills Council for Craft, Cultural Heritage, Design, Literature, Music, Performing Arts and Visual Arts. Jennie has worked with key employers and stakeholders within the sector, engaging them in our programmes and projects, ranging from Creative Apprenticeships to education projects including qualification reform and research. This work has resulted in over 700 Apprenticeships being delivered across the country, helping to diversify creative and cultural sectors and ensure accredited training in partnership with national colleges. Prior to working at Creative & Cultural Skills, Jennie led a team working for Hays Recruitment advising small, medium and large businesses on their training and recruitment needs, skills development and careers advice for all levels of staff.

Creative & Cultural Skills is the Sector Skills Council for Craft, Cultural Heritage, Design, Literature, Music, Performing, and Visual Arts. Jennie Godsalve, Engagement Manager talked about the importance of harnessing the skills of your staff.
